What is worldbuilding? How does a writer build a fictional world that diverges from the familiar one? In this workshop we'll explore the philosophical and practical aspects of worldbuilding, examining various ways in which fictional worlds can differ and various strategies for conveying counterfactuals. By considering passages from a range of stories, participants will learn how to flip ordinary reality on its head while bringing the reader along. The workshop will include an optional writing exercise in shifting from the ordinary to the strange.
Scott Alexander Howard has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Toronto and was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard, where his research focused on the relationship between emotion and memory. His debut novel, The Other Valley, was an instant national bestseller, a CBC best book of the year, a Washington Post notable novel of 2024, and a PBS Book Club pick.
